UniCopy V1.0 documentation
I decided to program another copytool, despite of the fact that there exist
already quite a number of copytools, because many of the existing copytools
have certain good features.
UniCopy should combine some of the features I enjoyed most within one
program. In fact UniCopy is very similar to Turbobackup which was my
favourite copyprogram so far.
Some special features of UniCopy:
- all commands can either be launched via mouse or keyboard (TurboBackup)
- UniCopy is a multitasking program - so you can listen to music, write a
letter, etc... during backup (TurboBackup)
- the copyprocess starts at track 79 - most diskerrors occur in track 70-79
(TurboBackup)
- you can save your preferences to disk
UniCopy will try to load them from current dir, S:, DEVS: when being
started. (XCopy pro)
- Automode: UniCopy continues backup, when all disks have been changed
(TetraCopy)
- UniCopy is besides Turbobackup the fastest verifycopy I know.
- UniCopy displays detailed error informations in brackets
- UniCopy detaches itself from CLI. So no run command is required.
- If you are running Kickstart V2.04 (V37.xxx or higher) you will see UniCopy
styled in the 'new look'.
(sorry, req.library doesn't support V2.0, yet - so some requesters are
still old fashioned!)
- UniCopy plays a small "Almost-ready"-sample a short time before the
backup is finished.
The functions:
- Diskdrives gadgets:
shortcuts: step forward: 0 / 1 / 2 / 3
step backward: Shift+0/Shift+1/Shift+2/Shift+3
There are 6 different possibilities for this Gadget
Off: this diskdrive is not involved in backup process
Source: this drive is the sourcedrive (only 1 allowed)
Destination: UniCopy will write to this disk with NO verify
IMPORTANT NOTE: I implemented this in my opinion SENSELESS mode
only, because many freaks like it.
So use this mode ONLY, if you don't care about
non working disks!!!!????
If you use this mode on any drive you will be
warned and asked whether you really want to use
this mode.
Verify Destination: UniCopy will write to this disk with verify
- reread and compare
Double Verify Dest: UniCopy will write to this disk with double verify
- reread and compare twice
Not available: UniCopy can't get access to this drive
- not connected
- not enough memory left
- blocked by other software
- Start/Abort gadget
shortcut: s / a
With this gadget you can start the copyprocess.
When the copyprocess has already been started, you can abort
the backup - also cancels automode
- Start Automode gadget
shortcut: A (Shift+a)
Same as Start gadget, but switches to automode
(Copy continues when all disks have been changed)
Every startup error (write-protected destination drives, etc...)
stops the automode
- Retry gadget
shortcut: r
When a diskerror occurred you can cause the program to repeat
the last opertation.
Note: UniCopy makes 3 internal retries
- Skip gadget
shortcut: s
When a diskerror occurred you can cause the program to leave
out the track which couldn't be copied correctly.
If there are destination-disks left with nothing written on it
UniCopy will format their corresponding tracks.
Warning:The software was unable to read or write a track
correctly (diskerror/copyprotection)
The software on the destination-disk will in most cases
not work as it should
- Save Prefs gadget
shortcut: S (Shift+s)
Save the current environment (Disk & Copymode gadgets)
to a file you may select from the filerequester.
At startup UniCopy searches for "UniCopy.Prefs" in the current
directory, in S: and DEVS: and loads it into memory if found.
- Load Prefs gadget
shortcut: L (Shift+l)
Load and set UniCopy preferences (Disk & Copymode gadgets)
from a file you may select from the filerequester.
- Quit gadget
shortcut: Q (Shift+q)
Exits UniCopy when no identical disks are in the drives anymore
otherwise AmigaDos is likely to crash due to an OS bug.
- Info gadget
shortcut: i
A window with some infos about this program will be opened.
Press 'Resume' to continue!
- Copymode gadget
shortcuts: step forward: m
step backward: M (Shift+m)
There are three different copymodes:
Normalcopy:
Will make a fast backup, with own hardware control
Tries to free the diskdrives whenever possible
Lock-Drives-Copy:
same as Normalcopy, but diskdrives will be kept locked
from trackdiskaccess (No systemrequesters)
Trackdiskcopy:
Will make a backup with the trackdisk.device
Tries to free the diskdrives whenever possible
(Should be the safest method for the future)
TrackDisplayInformations:
'r': UniCopy currently reads or has finished reading from this track
'w': UniCopy currently writes or has finished writing to this track
'v': UniCopy currently verifies or has finished verifing this track
'?': UniCopy failed to read, write or verify this track
' ': This track has not been involved in the backup, yet
'!': This track was skipped by the user and has not been read or written
'f': UniCopy currently formates or has finished formatting this track
(Tracks on destination-disks are automatically formated, if a read-
error on the corresponding source track has been skipped)
All operations which took place on the down side of the disk will be
printed in color 3. If all operations on the down side of a cylinder
were successful the corresponding rectangle on the TrackDisplay will
be filled with color 2.
Operations concerning the upper side of the disk will be printed
in color 1.
UniCopy prompts you with several requesters. You can respond to them
either by clicking on the corresponding gadget or by using one of the
following keyboard shortcuts:
For a POSITIVE response (e.g. 'Continue', 'Ok' , ...) use one
of these keys: 'y' , 'v'
For a NEGATIVE response (e.g. 'Cancel' , 'Resume' ,...) use one of
these keys: ESC , 'n' , 'q' , 'b'
NOTE: Resume gadgets are handled like negative choices!!!!
Final note:
For this version of UniCopy it is not allowed to start UniCopy more
than once. If this was possible, UniCopys diskmanagement might get
confused, which might result in not write-protected disks
(including source disks) being corrupted.
